Up until now our virtual environments have been symbolic, but not genuinely interactive.
Whether it’s first person or third person, we didn’t need certain affordances because our avatars did the interacting for us. All we needed to do was walk up to a dynamic object and “ping” it for the limited action to occur.
That led to some pretty strange conventions, such as cities full of symbolic doors that didn’t actually open.
In a virtual world what will let us know that we can open a particular door, and what will the hands that can use it look like?
